Sometime it takes walking in someone’s shoes to fully understand what they are going through. I treated heartburn AKA acid reflux for years without knowing what the sufferers were going through.

That changed with my first pregnancy. I suffered from heartburn so bad that I lived on bland foods and Tums for half of my pregnancy.

It is far better to prevent heartburn by avoiding the common triggers than hoping for a cure. What do you think?

Here is a nifty list of heartburn triggers:

1. Spicy foods

2. Alcohol

3. Coffee

4. Chocolate

5. Laying down right after a heavy meal

6. Anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen, aspirin and naproxen

7. Smoking

8. Acidic foods like tomatoes

9. Carbonated drinks (soda)

10. Juices containing citric acid – orange juice, lemonade

Be sure to have Tums or Zantac in your medicine cabinet as backup for the unpreventable heartburn.
