On a fairly regular basis, I am asked about diet detox products, growth and bioidentical hormones, weight loss procedures, colon cleanses, liquid cocktails and concoctions advertised to purify and rev up the body’s metabolism.

I honestly tell all my patients that if those things worked as advertised, us doctors would take them ourselves!

The only method that has actually shown to help with weight loss and stimulate the immune system is INTERMITTENT FASTING (not starving oneself or developing an eating disorder). This means purposeful fasting from food for about 24 hours on a regular basis (like once a month, or as frequently as once a week).

This can stimulate your immune system and boost your metabolism. Intermittent fasting in conjunction with a healthy eating plan and active lifestyle, can help one achieve weight management goals.

BEFORE YOU COMMIT TO FASTING

1. Clear this medically with your personal doctor (of course diabetics and other patients with certain chronic medical conditions should not fast unless directed)

2. Choose a restful and quiet day so as not to overextend yourself or exercise when fasting.

3. HYDRATE, HYDRATE, HYDRATE! You must still drink water.

4. Take the opportunity to meditate, pray, or be mindful of your spiritual and emotional needs at this time as well

**Remember, fasting has been noted in the Bible over 2000 years ago and is still used regularly today in many religions as a method to purify the body, mind, and spirit.
